The Walk - 4 miles of easy walking

Map of walk. Map copyright 2004 Phillip's, see information at base of page.Starting at Arlesey railway station, walk down Old Oak Close to the junction next to the Old Oak public house.

At the Old Oak public house, cross the road to walk the footpath (waymarked Kingfisher Way) bearing diagonally to the right to follow the Kingfisher Way between Pix Court and the A507 bypass.

Cross the stile keeping the Pix Brook to your right, to a small plantation and hedge. Turn Left to cross the A507 taking great care - fast moving traffic.

With the hedge to your right, follow the waymarked path to cross a small ditch. The section of footpath following the Kingfisher Way along the River Ivel was a link between St Peter's church Arlesey and St Guthlac's in Astwick. Both churches were served by the monks that lived at the Monastery of Etonbury. Both churches are still served by the Vicar of Arlesey. Both the school and the wood take their name from the site of the monastery that was at Arlesey, now buried by the A507 bypass and Etonbury Farm.

With the hedge now on your left, continue to the River Ivel. Turn Right and follow the river to a waymarker with a path off to the right.

Optional route

Turn Right and follow the path. After crossing the A507, proceed to a footbridge over the Pix Brook then through a housing estate (The Hermitage) to the Stotfold Road. Turn Right to go back to the station.

Main route

Continue straight ahead and follow the Kingfisher Way along the river to a bridge. Turn Right and cross the field and ditch. Turn Right, leaving the Kingfisher Way, onto a bridleway to the Stotfold Road keeping the ditch on your right. Opposite the Fox & Duck public house, Turn Right along Arlesey Road passing Etonbury School.

Optional route

Continue to the underpass and Stotfold Road. Then straight ahead to the station via Old Oak Close.

Main route

At the end of the school grounds, cross the road to a five bar metal gate to enter Etonbury Wood. Keeping the school to your left, follow the permissive waymarked path. Etonbury Wood was planted as a Farm Woodland demonstration project using EU and other funding. A guide leaflet is available.

Turn Right at the end of the fence to the stile. Cross, bear left to pass midway between the school fence (left) and the Pix Brook (right). The broad path wends its way to a stile. Over the stile, Turn Right to cross a bridge. Do not cross the stile but Turn Left to follow the brook and hedge to a broad track.

Turn Left, then immediately Right to continue in your original direction, the hedge on your left and the woodland on your right, to the A507 road.

Cross the A507, taking great care - fast moving traffic - to a waymarked footpath. Straight ahead to the houses at Arlesey. Pass between the houses to the junction of Hillary Rise and Lymans Road.

Walk straight ahead down Lymans Road to the High Street. Cross over and Turn Right, passing the White Horse public house and the former St Peter's church school (both on the left). After 150 yards, Turn Left to enter Woodland Chase pocket park.

Option 1

Turn Right to walk up through Woodland Chase pocket park leaving via the car park in Bury Mead Road. At the carpark, Turn Right to the junction and Turn Left into Church Lane.

Option 2

Turn Left and follow the track round the Chase Hill housing estate to exit the path at the bottom of Bury Mead Road. Walk straight up the road, passing Carters Way on your left, to Turn Left into Church Lane.

Main route

Follow the road passing St Peter's church (a short cut can be taken through the churchyard leaving by the North gate) to the Old Oak public house. Turn Left into Old Oak Close and back to the railway station and your starting point.
