The Walk - 4 miles of easy walking

Map of walk. Map copyright 2004 Phillip's, see information at base of page.Starting at Arlesey railway station, immediately pass under the A507 bridge and Turn Right to follow the footpath/cycleway up to cross the railway and River Hiz.

Continue along the footpath until you reach a gateway on your right by a red bricked house. Turn Right into the park at the track marked with a Kingfisher Way waymark disc.

Carry straight on to pass through two sets of five-bar gates (seat at the second one). Through the last gate, continue ahead to get the first view of Henlow Grange, on your right.

Keep straight on past the house. When you get to the new entrance at a crossroad, proceed straight across on the unmade road.

Turn Right at the next Kingfisher Way waymark post and continue, keeping the Grange on your right, to cross two river bridges. Poppy Hill Farm lies straight ahead.

Do not enter the farm track but Turn Left to head North towards Langford.

After passing the fishing lakes (former sandpits) entrance on the left, the roadway narrows to a path passing over a narrow bridge.

FAfter about 300 yards, turn right passing a sign saying 'No Bridleway'.

With a field on your left and hedge to the right, walk until you come to a concrete roadway with a view of the railway ahead.

Turn left past the waymark and follow the roadway to the brow of the hill and another waymark.

Turn right and head for the footbridge over the railway. After crossing the railway, walk a few yards to the waymark and Turn Left.

After a few yards at the next waymark, Turn Right and head South with the railway on your right.

At the finger post Turn Left (East) and cross the field.

Pass through a gap in the hedge and cross the second field, with the ditch on your right, leaving the railway behind you.

With the buildings of Hill Farm in the trees to your right, cross another field with a hedge on your left, still heading East. At the end of the hedge, Turn Right for a few yards to a finger post.

Drawing of Common VioletPass over the metal stile, Turn Left keeping the hedge on your left to a further finger post in the corner of the field, and Turn Right heading South Hill Farm, in the trees, being slightly to your right.

Walk halfway along the field edge to a finger post, Turn Left over a stile and footbridge, then Turn Right, keeping the hedge on your right, and head towards an irrigation pond, passing round it on your left to the opposite corner.

At the end of the pond, Turn Right at the waymark then immediately Left at the next waymark onto a gravelled road, passing a wooden barn and large farm buildings on your left. Stay on the gravel road, keeping the buildings to your left. At the waymark under the willow tree, Turn Right and follow the wide track.

Picture of the River Ivel.Head for the willows, cross the River Ivel and Turn Right onto the Kingfisher Way, with the hamlet of Astwick to the East and the Arlesey/Stotfold road to the South beyond Waterloo Farm.

Keeping the river on your right, follow the Kingfisher Way observing the waymarks. At the end of the straight section of track, Turn Left following the field edge with the hedge on your right.

Pass over a ditch through to the next field with the hedge now on your left.

Follow the track to the A507 by-pass. Take care crossing the road (fast moving traffic) and follow the Kingfisher Way over a stile.

At Pix Brook, Turn Right to cross a second stile, then the brook to Stotfold Road in Arlesey.

Turn Right to go back to the railway station and the start of your walk.

Henlow Grange

Home to the Gribble family (1896 -1909). Philip Gribble, a renowned World War II correspondent. It was also a former home to Lord BoydofMerton (1930s-1950s) who, as Colonial Secretary, granted independence to many former British Colonies. In ancient times, it was the centre of Henlow Llanthony Manor. The house has been extensively extended to house a health and beauty complex but the old house with the clock tower can be clearly distinguished.
